Gumbo MAX Preview

Welcome to the Gumbo MAX preview release on Adobe Labs. "Gumbo" is the codename for the next generation of Adobe® Flex®, including both the next generation of Flex Builder™ and the next generation of the opensource Flex SDK. All attendees of Adobe MAX 2008 have been invited to participate in this early Preview release.

Gumbo delivers a long list of new features and improvements to existing features in three main themes: design and development, IDE productivity, and data-centric application development. For an overview of the features included in this first release, please read Tim Buntel’s What’s New in Gumbo article. You can also see what’s new in the Flex SDK by reading Matt Chotin’s New features in the Flex SDK article.

Please use this opportunity to explore new features, see the new workflow between Gumbo and Adobe Flash® Catalyst™ (previously codenamed "Thermo") and communicate early feedback. Because this is an early release, you should only use Gumbo for testing and exploratory purposes.

Important Information About MAX Preview Software DVD

We have just discovered an issue that affects the Flex Builder Gumbo installer for Mac OS X. This issue does not affect Flex Builder Gumbo on Windows and does not affect Flash Catalyst. When you install the Flex Builder Gumbo preview build on Mac OS X, please accept the default installation folder. Do not select any other folder since the files in any alternate folder may be deleted. This issue will be fixed in future builds of Flex Builder Gumbo. As a reminder, please do not distribute your copy of the MAX software preview DVD.

Getting Started

Follow these steps to begin experiencing Gumbo:

  1. Install Gumbo using your Adobe MAX preview DVD. Please accept the default installation folder and do not select any other folder.

Please note that you can still install a separate copy of Gumbo standalone and it will remain separate from any Flex Builder 2/3 installations. Also, workspaces created in Flex Builder 2 or Flex Builder 3 are not supported by Gumbo. Lastly, a project that has its settings modified by Gumbo will no longer open in Flex Builder 3 or Flex Builder 2.

  2. Read Tim Buntel’s What’s New in Gumbo article

FAQ

What are the goals of the preview?
The Gumbo MAX preview release is intended to enable Adobe MAX conference attendees to explore the new workflow between Gumbo and Adobe Flash Catalyst (previously codenames Thermo,) plus the new workflow between Gumbo and Flash Professional. In addition, developers will be able to explore the new data-centric development features and provide feedback through the bugbase.
Where can I find out more about the features in Gumbo?
Tim Buntel’s What’s New in Gumbo article and Matt Chotin’s New features in the Flex SDK article are both good resources.
Will Gumbo work with the Flex 3 SDK or the Flex 2 SDK?
No. Although Gumbo will later work with previous versions of the Flex SDK, this limited prerelease will only work with the next generation Flex SDK.
Will Gumbo be available for download from Adobe Labs?
No. Gumbo will ONLY be distributed on DVD during the Adobe MAX conference.
When will Gumbo be available to the rest of the public?
Adobe is not yet disclosing the full public beta release date for Gumbo, however we expect the first fully public beta to occur in the first half of 2009.
Can I work on my existing Flex 2 or Flex 3 applications using the Gumbo preview release?
No. Because Gumbo currently only supports the next generation Flex SDK, you will not be able to work on your existing Flex applications.
